How to Connect Your Bank via API and Track Tenant Payments Automatically

Every month you spend dozens of minutes checking whether your tenants have paid. You go through statements, compare amounts, hunt for variable symbols (Czech payment reference numbers). Rential handles all of this for you automatically - just connect your bank account once. We support all the major Czech banks.

What you get by connecting your bank

  • Transactions downloaded from your account automatically every hour
  • Incoming payments matched to specific tenants
  • An instant overview - who has paid, who still owes
  • Less manual work, fewer mistakes

Supported banks

Rential supports two connection methods, depending on which bank you use:

🏦 Open Banking (PSD2)

You log in directly with your bank - no tokens or passwords are ever entered into Rential.

  • Česká spořitelna
  • Komerční banka
  • ČSOB
  • Moneta Money Bank
  • Raiffeisenbank
  • Air Bank
  • UniCredit Bank
  • mBank
🔑 API token

You generate a token in your internet banking and enter it into Rential.

  • Fio banka

Method A - Open Banking for most banks

Open Banking is a banking standard (PSD2) that every bank in the EU is required to support. It works much like "Sign in with Google" - you are redirected to your bank's own login page, where you approve read access to your transactions. Rential never receives your password and cannot make payments.

The connection is provided by Enable Banking - a regulated Account Information Service Provider (AISP) supervised by the Finnish Financial Supervisory Authority (Finanssivalvonta), registered to provide services across the EU, including the Czech Republic. More than 2,500 European banks are available through the same platform.

  1. 1

Go to the Bank section in Rential

In the left-hand menu, click Bank and press the + Connect bank button.

  2. 2

    Select your bank

A window will show the list of supported banks. Click yours - Česká spořitelna, KB, ČSOB and others.

  3. 3

Log in with your bank and approve access

You will be redirected to your bank's login page. Log in as usual and confirm that Rential may read your transactions. Rential never sees your password or login credentials.

  4. 4

    Done - transactions download automatically

Once you are redirected back to Rential, the connection is complete. Transactions will download automatically every hour (and any time manually via the Synchronize button).

Method B - Fio banka via API token

Fio banka offers its own free REST API for reading transactions. You generate an API token in your internet banking - a unique key tied to a specific account - and enter it into Rential.

  1. 1

Log in to Fio banka internet banking

Go to ib.fio.cz and log in with your usual credentials.

  2. 2

    Open Settings → API access

In the top menu, click Settings (the gear icon) and choose the API access tab.

  3. 3

    Add a new API key

Click Add access. Choose the account your rent payments arrive on and confirm. The system will generate a token - a long string of characters.

  4. 4

Copy the token - you will only see it once

Once generated, the token is displayed only once. Copy it and switch to Rential.

  5. 5

    Enter the token in Rential

In the Bank section, click the Fio API token button, paste the copied token and confirm. The system verifies the token and saves the connection.

What happens after synchronization?

Rential compares incoming transactions against your tenants' open payments. Matching happens automatically based on:

  • The variable symbol - if the tenant pays with the VS (the payment reference number from Rential), matching is exact
  • Amount and date - the system compares the amount to the rent within a ±7 day window and a ±5 CZK tolerance

Once matched, the tenant's payment status automatically changes to Paid and you get a clear overview on your dashboard.

Is it secure?

Yes. The same applies to both methods - Rential has read-only access to your transactions. It cannot:

  • Make payments or withdrawals
  • Change your account settings
  • Access any other products you have with the bank

Open Banking (PSD2) - Rential never receives your password. You log in directly with your bank. You can revoke access at any time in your bank's settings (third-party access / Open Banking section).

Fio API token - the token is read-only and can be cancelled at any time in Fio internet banking under Settings → API access.

Tip: the variable symbol is the key to exact matching

When a payment is created in Rential, every tenant gets a unique variable symbol. If the tenant uses it when paying, matching is 100% accurate - the system knows immediately whose payment arrived, even if they paid a different amount or on a different day.

Summary

  • Česká spořitelna, KB, ČSOB and others - connect via Open Banking (PSD2) in a minute, no tokens needed
  • Fio banka - connect via an API token generated in your internet banking
  • Rential downloads transactions every hour and matches payments automatically
  • Always read-only - no payments, no changes to your account settings
  • Save dozens of minutes a month and eliminate manual errors
